Because it's a le9 gen 3 block so strong enough for 600 hp straight out the factory.

Slightly interestingly, I've a Gen 2 LE9 block, which isn't sand cast and has liners.

You have a Le5 block which is gen 2. Same as the b207 but a 88mm bore size instead.

So Le9 gen 2.5 or 3 to make it easier. Same block as the A20nft Astra but le9 is 2.4 version.

A Le5 gen 2

And a standard z22se gen 1 looks the same as the Le5 block gen 2. Only difference is the gen 1 has a 66mm deep water channel and the gen 2 has a 104mm deep water channel.

Nice uniform water jacket at the top of the cylinders.

This is what hopefully makes its stronger and no need for liners.

And the Gen 3 liners are cast-in, so no liner change possible...

Aha. Thanks.

Was wondering what to do with my own "new" block. Change liners, honing or boring. But it was a case of apples and pears I guess :)

Everything is all here and done now, except the delivery of my cams 🙈 In the end I've order cat cams as comp had no stock and wasn't planning anytime soon to have stock. Plus they are the most unhelpful people ever 😡

The 2.4 has no oil cooler standard (like the Z22SE). So install a Z22SE oil cooler plate, or better drill and tap 2 new oil cooler connections. (1x return hose and 1x oil pressure sender)

The actual technical literature / blurb for the LE5/9 engine (2.4) states there is no requirement for an oil cooler (being noted as an advantage for efficiency, supposedly), although this is in its original application, not a sports car..

I reused the standard VX220 oil cooler arrangement on my 2.4.

This is what il be getting done with tapping two holes, so there is no need for the stupid metal oil rings ever again 😁

Haggi, I think you are wise to elect for a good home made oil cooler setup on a big power engine. I have always suspected my oil gets too hot and wish I had a non OEM cooler in mine.

just to show the crank balancing marks are aligned. They are added to the photo, not the engine :P
