"....space behind the passenger front light,,,"

That's where my foglight had a complete meltdown when it was turned on for the MOT.  Smoke everywhere.

Behind the passenger headlight is the fusebox and relay board, sadly the age of the cars and the exposure to the elements that the area can get will lead to high resistance paths forming and best case you get a broken harness and worst case is poor Pete here :(

Not being a panicmongerer here, but I think it would be prudent to start looking at the wiring harness as a one off refurb/service part sooner rather than later for many.

Flapping fuel lines are also a fire risk. Have you checked those ?

Yes secured by the header tank. I believe this fire may have originated from the front though.

A decent point. I've just went through the very painful process of replacing the entire car loom due to an unsolvable starting issue, which I think must be a damaged wire / corrosion somewhere, which proved impossible to track down easily.

No surprise that 20 years down the road these things start to have issues..

The surplus harnesses were recently sold off by Lotus.  I'm sure there are several tucked away (inc martins) so if his is sold a wanted ad might prove fruitful.

I see that Hastings has agreed to a £1.66bn takeover by Finland's Sampo and South Africa's Rand Merchant Investment.

The cash offer will hand Hastings investors 250p per share as well as an interim dividend of 4.5p per share. That sent Hastings’ shares soaring 17 per cent higher to 253p in early trading.

Hastings’ profit after tax leapt 43.4 per cent to £54.8m in the six months to 30 June, compared to the same period the year before.

Looks as if they have been deliberately hanging onto as much revenue as possible in order to look more attractive to potential buyers.

Read an interesting feature, in possibly the Telegraph, the other day about the guy behind the motorclaimguru service and how successful he's been in negotiating claims with recalcitrant insurers. Might be worth a chat, if there are still ongoing problems to see whether he can help.
