No wonder I didnt know they were there, you cant see any of them with the clam on. With the clam on, it will far from easy to make brakets to go on there, so may go the easy route and just stick better heatshield onto the back wall. I know its not the best solution but do you think that will be ok, and, what sort of glue can I use, glue for nails type mainstream stuff, or would it have to be heat proof? Martin s

I wil try that first before the glueing, but in real life that space is minute and very hard to get hands and bolts and brackets in! Martin s

Martin there's far more space to work if you take the driver side wheel archliner off and reach in from there.

Martin, you might need to modify Winstar's design to use the mounting point for the earth connection (and the surpressor) as shown by the leftmost green circle in this picture. I don't think (on mine at least) that the leftmost heatshield mounting point is accessible - mine is fairly well blocked by one of the tubes. It might be possible to get a very short M8 bolt in there but that would mean reversing the way the Z bracket mounts to the shield in order to slot it behind the manifold.

If you do need to mount it that far across, it should make it even easier to extend down to gap between the coolant pipes and the manifold itself.

Got a quote of £400 + VAT for ceramic coating on the outside of the manifold only, earlier today!!!!

Shan't be bothering with that, me thinks!

I'll enquire about that tonight, im sure a workmate with a big power scooby had his done for a fair bit less than that!

I've just taken out the damaged original, its made of the most pathetic rubber/foam with reject tin foil on top. Although Winstars designs good, I dont think its viable in the space thats there (certainly not for me), but the simple solution for me, seems to be - to put the new better heat shield into the same slot that held up the old one, but lean it forward towards the manifold, and bend it up along the inside of the boot edge where it will be bolted through that lip, then fold it slightly over to deflect heat towards the vent holes. This will be very easy, leave a good air space behind and if cut right, I should still be able to get a section that drops down and shields the near pipes. Will do it tomorrow and post details of my technical masterpiece/disaster, either way, you cant do a worse job than is there, and even if mine hadnt melted away, I would be doing this I think, having seen the original in close up. ok, spoke to him lat night and the firm he uses is Zircotec apparently they are very, very good.....

he was saying it's unbelievable just how much it drops the temps on the manifold on his Imprezza almost to the point where you could possibly touch it after a drive whereas before it'd melt your skin off at 6ft :D

if your feelng overly flush getting the inside of the manifold done aswell is the way forward

fire them an email off for a quote, its free to ask! ;)

New heat shield now done and it looks good and neat, and should work really well. Fits in neatly with an air gap behind and a section that protects the pipes as well. Only two small holes needed to drill to fit. Martin s

Just a suggestion.. You may want to fold and hammer the edges of the Nimbus shield over. That stops the layers of the material separating because of vibrations and makes the edges less sharp. Bye, Arno.

That's who I went to and got the initial ballpark quote of £400. Sent them a few photos of the manifold and they've come back with a more accurate quote. £228+shipping+VAT for the standard off white finish plus 15% on top, if I wanted a topcoat in a different colour.

It's marketing but they reckon it reduces the temperature of the manifold itself by as much as 173°C and underbonnet ambient temperature by up to 30°C. Certainly a worthwhile saving if the replacement heatshielding isn't sufficient, or for those with hyper tuned turbots and heat problems.

I've encountered plenty of heat issues from my 2ubular exhaust. I initially wrapped the manifold, which helped a great deal; accept it just transferred the heat further down the exhaust. I melted 2 02 sensors an engine mount, cables & caused problems with my gearbox cables. I even melted the clam & paintwork around the single exhaust tip. I now have heat shields covering all sensitive areas near to the exhaust. It still amazes me that all the other S/C cars out there have not also suffered the same heat problems...Yes Nick, I am also referring to you!!! MaxR
