which pistons are best for an SC build, and which valves- i assume the 1mm lift ones? i am mighty confused after techie has lowered his compression, although i thought higher is better? Dave.

Higher is better for N/A, lower is good for forced, but I'd stay standard CR for the M62, if it was Harrop charged go lower.

Although if you want to just stick to 290 instead of 300ish, stay with standard pistons :P

Increasing compression ratio is better suited to an NA engine. Retaining the standard compression ratio or indeed lowering it, is better suited to FI engines. Think higher compression is more susceptible to knock and means the ignition has to be retarded to avoid it. When I had the initial conversion with the standard pistons, Courtenay's had to retard my ignition to suit which gives the ECU more headroom to adjust the ignition if it detects shitty fuel or knock. When I went back post-rebuild with the lower compression pistons they could advance the ignition back to standard. Having the lower compression engine (like NickB777, Joe_589 and I have) means a further upgrade to a Harrop in the future is also no problem. Theoretically this would still apply to the original Courtenay conversions with the decompression plate but, obviously, that would put the rods at the very least way past their "safe" limits.

If you're going to strengthen the components, either stick with the standard Z22SE compression ratio option or lower it with the low compression version of the pistons.

Of course, all of the above could be utter tripe as I know nothing about engines....

Techie is correct, higher compression for NA and lower for FI engines

8.9:1 pistons are really only needed for Harrop engines / 300+ bhp, if you don't ever want to go past 300bhp then the 10:1 will be fine, if you can live with 280bhp then the standard pistons are ok - but it's best to fit the forged pistons above that figure

standard saab valves are very good for sc, even the standard z22se are ok, the wasted stem valves are better suited to NA but the GM Racing valves are the best for NA and FI
