The metal bit of the new key (blank) is cut in any locksmith - you need an existing metal key to copy from. Then when these ebay keys are "coded up", its actually the ECU that is coded to accept the new chip (in the new key). So if you only have 1 key, at least go and get a new key cut (it'll cost < £5, without chip etc.). Then if you lose your only key, you'll have a spare metal key to take a copy from - it might save you £500 for new locks etc.

I have being know to remove the chip and glue it to/near the cars ignition barrel, and cut spare keys for £5... So no risk of loosing the chip, and spare keys for a song... there is an obvious down side, but I did this with sub £1000 value cars......,

Ordered a blank key yesterday as I only have one key. I know my code works with Opcom as I've been in to play already. If anyone needs a key programmed and doesn't have Opcomm and is relatively local to me (junction 16 on the M25) then just give me a shout.

Just programmed a couple of keys I bought from ebay and they work fine. If I can do it then it really is very easy to do! In fact the most difficult part it getting into the footwell to connect / disconnect the opcom! Although I'm at a bit of a disadvantage here due to too much beer and bad food! If anyone needs a key programmed near Crayford / Dartford in the next couple of weeks just give me a shout, I'd be more than happy to pop over and sort it out for you. thumbsup R

Great post packs. My spare key wont start my car (I changed ECU so think it needs a reprogram) because of the immobiliser. Presume this would fix it fit me? J

As I understand it, keys can only be linked to 1 car. I thought that would mean 1 ECU / immobiliser. However, if you've had your ECU changed and your original key still works then perhaps your spare key just needs to be 're-associated' with the immobiliser. When your ECU was replaced did you get a new 4 digit security code or could this have remained the same? Get someone local to you to give it a go. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. R

Anyone had problems with key cutters refusing to do the cutting? I went to a few places around here and they all said that, due to questionable quality of the key blade metal, they don't want the aggro/are banned from it. Sounds like a scam to sell their own blanks but has stopped me getting mine cut. :(

It's a bit anal and my own view would be that some business is better than no business but I can kind of see their point. They know they can trust the quality of the blanks that they supply where as others could be sh!t quality and break causing damage to their machines or themselves. It's also a bit of a cheek IMO and akin to getting tyres bought online fitted at your local outfitters or using a cafes seating to eat your picnic.

Yeah, my expectations had been that it would have played out like that. 1) Enter shop 2) Present key and blank 3) Politely request copy be made 4) Key(s) get(s) cut 5) Pay for service 6) Thank key cutting technician 7) Leave

That's good to know. So once you have a key cut what's the process?

That's good to know. So once you have a key cut what's the process?

Once the key is cut (may need to try a local place, as chains like Timpson's will refuse and try to sell you one of their keys), you also need the security code from the little business card sized 'car pass'. If you've not got that card then it's about £30 to get a new one from Vauxhall (so I've read on here anyways).

Once you've got that the trickiest part about the whole process was diabling driver signature enforcement on Windows 10, to allow the software to install properly. Here's a loink to show you how to do that: http://answers.micro...2336d248?auth=1

One OP-COM is installed on your computer, plug the OP-COM adaptor into car and laptop, then follow the step by step instructions to program a new key. It's possible that the engine management light will come on if things aren't done in exactly the correct order, but this fault can be resolved in OP-COM if it does, so it's not really an issue.

As I said, I'm more than happy to help so let me know if you've got any other questions.

I see. A bit technical but is there a risk of screwing things up for your existing key such that it doesn't work?
