Astravxr

Slight wheezing sound even off throttle + ticking when you start up until it gets warm (when the metal expands and closes the crack) is 99% a cracked turbo manifold

or just an failed exhaust manifold gasket. sometime the studs break and you can see a telltale black scorch on that port.

It IS a Turbogauge the writing on it saying so is the give away. It's basically a re-branded scangauge I believe.
So   back at you for your eagerness to correct :P

I was wondering if anyone can comment on comparing the Scangauge II with the Turbogauge III? Is one better than the other or got more features? Turbogauge http://cgi.ebay.co.u...6#ht_3029wt_689 Scangauge http://cgi.ebay.co.u...2#ht_3257wt_922 Turbogauge is £20 cheaper. Found an older thread asking similar but no answers. Cheers.

You are right, i didn't look that closely. Is it different to the Scanguage? Unless I am wrong again the one thing the scanguage doesn't do is measure turbo boost. Does this one? If it doesn't then it a supid name!

No no no no no

It is a Turbo Gauge, different make to a Scan Gauge! Boost gauge is to the right of the steering wheel..... thumbsup

I love my Turbo Gauge, its amazing! (they say they do for all cars, but some cars it wont read all codes, some cars none at all, but seems to love the z20let engine, reads every code on the list!!) :yeahthat:

Reads every fault code!

Gives all readings obviously.

Gives an accurate BHP reading (within about 10bhp)

Its got loads of other sh** lol...

Only down side is that the temperature is in F' Fahrenheit, but fine once you get used to converting it in your head.

Best replace it with a vxr one then mate, I have a feeling Nev might have one knocking about so it might be worth a pm

Sorry to sound dumb but when you say changet the mani to a VXR one does that mean the VXR turbo too? My mate did a diagnostic test today and theres no error codes, i know a cracked manifold wouldnt come up as an error but if it was loosing that much boost wouldnt you get an error for that?

I dont know about the fault code thing but if your manifold is cracked or you even suspect it is, it's not a huge job to whip it off and inspect it. And yes the turbo is integral with tue manifold so simply replace the whole assembly. It works as a direct replacement and at the same time you are closer to stage 4.

Well because rolling roads are used for mapping cars.

They also give out a lot more readings than just a bhp figure even on a power run.

But yes on the vx the turbo gauge gives an accurate bhp figure, accurate on several other cars also. It may be out by 20bhp max, but for a £90 tool its fcuking good!

have you never heard of an on the road dyno? Its a simple version of that. it takes all the readings fro the ecu (which is the main purpose of a turbo gauge to read the ecu) and calculates a bhp figure. thumbsup

Did a better diagnostic test reading and i've found a code which is P1490 and all i can find is P1490 - Auxiliary Cooling Pump Relay Open Circuit. Is this a serious problem? This wouldnt cause boost problems or anything would it?

I've tried ringing the garage to book in today but there was no answer all day. Im going to try tomorrow but i've had lots of people out in the car and spoke to lots of people and they say that the whine noise just seems to be the turbo spooling up but i've never heard it on any other VX. One person did say it sounds like the manifold gasket has gone as theirs made the same noise. Theres obviously a problem with the missfiring/dropping revs on idle though but cant see that causing a problem to performance? Hopefuly i can get through to the garage tomorrow!

Auxiliary cooling pump is a secondary electric water pump that continues to run on for a bit after turning engine off, specifically to cool down the hot turbo. The pumps themselves are prone to failure and presumably that's what the code is indicating.
Not an engine breaker, and wouldn't cause your issues, but needs fixing at some point. Relatively easy fix, though you either need to drain coolant or clamp/plug the two hoses you need to take off and consequently refit.

Slightly off topic- but does that mean it's not necessary to sit idling for 30s after a drive in order to let the turbo cool down?

Yes as the turbo is spinning at a high rpm. It also gives the turbo oil feed a chance to get as much oil over the chocolate bearing as possible. chinky chinky
