Does it not make the TB hard up against the firewall?

Here's a pic of the final install. You can just about see the spacer. The clearance to the firewall seems fine to me...

Here's one from the other end that shows the TB clearance better.

TBH it doesnt look any closer. You need a TAT ally header tank, that plastic one looks out of place!! ;)

Oi! That's brand new that is! :P Besides, I think I've spent quite enough on ally things, right Joe?

Ah, that didn't cost me anything - my buddy, whose workshop space I borrowed, just so happened to have a pot left over from another job :D

It doesn't really. It just insulates the inlet manifold from heat conducted straight from the engine block itself.

That's what I meant in my first post, I would have thought the heat transfer from supercharged air going through the inlet would be much more of an issue than a fairly small contact area of conduction?

You will be surprised by the heat that is conducted straight into the manifold by the alloy engine block!! (running at ~87*C normally?)

And all that engine heat is simply pre-heating you charge coolant. I see my temps rising to 50*C while waiting for a traffic light and even cruising, no boost, the IAT is normally around 30-40*C. And that was with ~11*C temperatures outside!

Don't some more modern engine intake systems use a similar idea (although many use a plastic intake manifold anyway, ala Z22SE)? As said previously, its to help prevent heat transfer for the much hotter cylinder head (~90c) to what should be the much cooler (~30-40c) intake manifold. This should make the chargecooling circuits job slightly easier, hence an overall drop in intake temps.

I have one of those ZZP spacers fitted also. I spaced out the original manifold support bracket using washers, which while not quite as ideal as a bracket designed for it as per Rally's, is secure once correctly torqued up. ZZP do provide (what I presumed to be) a couple of small alloy spacers for this, but they seemed far to small to me...

As for mounting the spacers on the head, I dry fitted it, bolted it down, then carefully aligned it with the intake spacings (its can be slightlly off because of the difference in stud / bolt sizes between Z22SE and LSJ). I then used some gasket sealant in between the gap left between the holes in the spacer and the existing head studs. Once dry, the spacer is held in place and the remaining bolts can be carefully removed, and the manifold fitted.

I never spaced out the alternator, which I may do, as I believe this is partly attributable to melting of my live alternator feed during my first start attempt - its feckin close!

As another level of analness, I'm applying some light heat insulating matting on the block side of the manifold. I realise this probably won't make any difference, but it makes me feel good inside.. :grouphug:
