removing the ABS will be an instant MOT failure from April 2012 thumbsdown

What's the reg Neil? How can they distinguish between that and cars that never came with abs?

A grey area, much like the airbag.

Being a hand built car means a friendly MOT station would pass it and another could fail it :glare:

My friend has a marcos mantis. That's been recategorised somehow as a kit car. He has no problems not running a cat etc. I wonder if we could get that reclassification??

With regards to the upgrade I did say in my original post that I would suggest the new servo/master cylinder to be implemented with the abs module so in 99% of examples the abs would remain in tact. Mine's screwed though

You cant just look at discs, calipers and pads for better braking.. You also need to take into account the size and type of tyre you are using. In reards to the master cylinder, if you fit the ap racing calipers with the small and large piston and fit the front calipers on the rear the master cylinder can cope just fine. I had problems when the front 4 pots had 4 large pistons and then the master cylinder was just able to cope, i probably wouldnt of tracked it. There are other aspects such as braided hoses, brake fluid and what type, also what temperatures the fluid is capable of handling.

the MOT station has to prove it's obviously missing, so if it's not obviously missing they cannot fail it - I asked my local MOT station the other day

I think the problem is with the light bulb. It will illuminate when the stack fires up and will therefore show that's it's obviously missing. Removing the bulb will also be a fail. Can the stack be split and the abs writing be removed...?

if the light is off and the equipment is not fitted (like the airbag or abs) then it's not a fail, they accept that not all cars will have all the options. example: many petrol cars have the diesel glow plug light installed in the dash, but obviously don't have glow plugs :P

Of course, if you were very sneaky, you could redirect the black and yellow wire from the dash to a timed relay so that the ABS LED would light up and go out just as if the ABS unit was still there. Just saying...

Where is option 6 ? Fit a proper pedal box with a balance bar, 4 pots on the front and 2 pots on the rear ? At least, that's what I'm doing on mine... ;)

That is clearly the best option of all :) The trouble will be MOT, insurance and if you have to sell the car.

Why stop at 4-pots? I've got a nice pair of RS4 8-pots in the garage.

There are now a rather large number of options aren't there?

I'm going to try and arrange them in a way that makes some sense and then if you've experienced some of them, it would be great to get your views.

Your thoughts ladies and gentlemen. :D

Well folks.
What are your opinions about the BRAKES?

As I see it you can upgrade your calipers to 4, 6, 8 pots and it's not gonna make any significant improvement as you are still putting the same force into the circuit just spread across more pistons. I think a MC upgrade coupled with more pistons is one of the few ways to seriously improve things. Not that I've ever found the std 2 pot fronts lacking.
