Has your car ever had a rear shunt or been in a front end accident? I've seen the rear engine mount from the rear subframe bent on one car that I did not buy. This will have the effect of pushing the engine forward and adding extra shear force on the mount.

No not that I'm aware of. it's not registered and has all original parts, nothing looks out of the ordinary at all when up on a ramp and I've had a few people look who know VX's very well. We spent about 5hrs under it last night doing various things!! It's very strange, I'm waiting on a mechanic friend of mine who works at Vauxhall to send me a picture of what he can supply as an original Near side engine mount, he can get them for £60.00, usually they are £80+ to the general public.

70mm is correct

Ignore the fact this is an upgraded aftermarket mount, the dimensions are exactly the same as the originals

Ok so the old one i took off has been stretched?? 150mm seems a lot, it is also a lot bigger in diameter then the autovaux one? The 200 yd test drive was quiet until bang grrrr.. strange thing though the guy previous said he has had this engine mount noise for 4 years??

Are you running vibrasonic mounts too? any impressions? my maths says that I should use them next time I need to replace my mounts anyway - plus I imagine they are similar to adding the poly inserts in terms of engine movement

OK so I don't know how to upload images but the exploded diagram I just got faxed from Vauxhall shows a different engine mount than the one in the picture above ( I know it's aftermarket ) The one form Vauxhall is allot more bulky and bigger just like the one we took out last night...... It's Vauxhall part no 93172350, I need to show image but I don't know how!!!!

Nope. I didn't bother fitting them as I wasn't sure they really were an upgrade. There seemed to be more movement in them, than in the standard mounts.

One theory: the engine mounts have changed since the factory fitted mount, either due to supplier differences or to actually address the failures. If you only fit one, then you introduce an angle directing the force towards the new mount, increasing chance of failure. Replacing both removes this angle and puts it back to the original positioning, abit 15 mm lower. This will also change the bulk of the engine supporting from the top mounts to the bottom mounts, which are not known to fail. My guess is this is actually an improvement on the original based on the drop in height, but only if applied to both sides.

If memory serves the Near Side ones are horizontal into the block, the offside are vertical into the gearbox. Thats on an N/A anyway.
