isnt this much the same as   Standard NA's are so much better than Turdo's and vice versa......   ............time to move on me thinks...at this time of good will to all men..(but then why isnt that all the time)   :)   HH

You are trying to get on topic. This is the Off Topic section :)
move on, your having a laugh, you move on we are just getting started, it's a long running subject. (NA) Now Zuber before being interrupted what was you saying  Oh yes, Spirit or consciousness, isn't that just us being more intelligent than say and animal, wanting to believe we move on when we croak? We have the intellect to think what could happen or more to the point what some of us want to happen. Some will never accept the lights go out and that's it over so they look to religion in the hope of going some place else after death.

Gordon, I had previously made reference to a photo of yours and a certain resemblance to a certain other individual in jest. But I see you've really taken it to heart and decided to try and really take on the role full on. What have I done...

You could hypothesis either way and end up going in circles... People point to Out of Body Experiences or various other things for example, but then you would say that was just some random synaptic signals firing off some memory or something they read about...

I'd suggest you would be better off looking at the bigger overall picture, rather than just the one point in isolation and then base it on that. Of course, we might end up with different conclusions...

In that context, your statement "So it's not based on any kind of logic or reasoning, just some bizzare genetic flaw that some people have?" doesn't make any sense. At least to me...

When I wrote this I wasn't asking why people want to believe in a god, I was questioning why they do? I realise the two can be linked, as you have done, but a god doesn't exist just because people need one or want one.

No idea why people would believe all this made up stuff. Incredible that people still believe in it.

I have no interest in why people want to believe there's a god, and it's not actually what this thread is about. I have a mild interest in why they think there is one if there's some kind of reasoned logic in it.

Given that different communities all over the world, millenia after millenia have in the main come to the conclusion that there is there is is something beyond, I would have thought it would be reasonable thier is more to it than what people want...

There appears to be a significant vocal and influential minority that are dead set against religious belief and seem to have convinced themselves that this somehow makes them cleverer/superior and it's their job to convert others to their own beliefs :) (Not referring to you, this forum or anything. More generally looking at mentality of public bodies, media etc. In Northern Europe in particular).

I often wonder about why this minority is so vocal and active and even zealous about putting religion down. And I reckon it's fear. Fear of loosing the upper hand and control over the current establishment and it's thinking.

Again I can't speak on behalf of the majority of the the population over the millenia or for the 1/4 of the world population proclaiming to be muslim... But from my own personal perspective. I guess a couple of points on the logically front maybe:

- Over the millenia, we have had various persons coming along claiming to be messengers. Along with it providing various evidences to back up their claims. They were subject to scrutiny by those around them and able to convince others of the validity of their claims. You can argue about whether they were the real deal or not, but I would still call it a logical reason...

- The Quran asks you to study and reflect on Gods creation, the wonder of it. Many have, and having looked at it, I find it far fetched to accept it is all a bunch of accidents/luck. From looking at the Universe, down to the microscopic, there is so much that is just amazing and I just don't buy the just wait long enough and it will happen approach.

- You can then go onto individual teachings in the Quran, sayings of the prophet etc. But getting a bit deep now...

Well I'm blowed if I can find one  Just think how much of a persons life is wasted sitting in church, praying and all the other stuff they don't do following a religion if at the end, click the lights just go out. Now that would p*ss me off, then again you wouldn't know

But according your thinking, it's all just a series of happy accidents, even the urge to survive, pass on your genes or do something useful... There is no point.... In which case, how's it a waste ? I actually agree with you in part. I'd suggest sitting in a mosque praying of course. Much greater chance of success in the long term :)

Wife tells me I'm spending way too much time on this... I'm kind of surprised the way this thread has gone. I was expecting much more discussion on my reply post on Wives and Virgins in the hereafter :)

Ok, that's why my nightmare is sitting on a plane with a religious person. This has been a completely circular debate where we end up back at the begining with a sanctified holy person looking down at me as arogant, fearful and in a minority.

I think here's the nub of the issue. I don't care about being in a minority, although in Western Europe at least I'm not sure I am. Some people have to 'belong', be part of a group, be part of a majority and be looked after by a higher being. This is the basis for religion, but based on any kind of logic - no. And because many people feel the same way does a god exist - no.

By the way, the universe is totally random, and anyone questioning what the reason for existance is, is asking the wong question.

Anyway Zuber, you seem like a nice guy, but when you die I'll be waiting in your ficticious heaven laughing at you because it won't exist.....

....no wait?

Wasn't aimed at you Kurt, more the current media/political circles... No problem with people having genuine questions. Those dodgy ones that like to prod you for fun are another matter :P

But from where I'm standing, I do see unfair/negative treatment of religiously inclined persons of Christian pursuation by 'secular' types that basically think they know better and must win/stub out the competition as it were and 'reeducate us'.

By the way, nothing wrong with being a minority (you're more than welcome)...

But a quick Google. Assuming you trust anything listed on a wiki...

Like I say, I don't mind being in a minority, and being in a majority doesn't make you right, as millions of Germans will testify. The argument 'because lots of people believe it, it must be true' is a very dangerous one.

I worked out in the Middle East which is the most religious part of the world. I spent quite some time by the Lebanon border on the Israeli side . It's one of the most dangerous places you can go to and yet everyone there says they are religious.,., go figure ?
