String Theory may yet prove to be a dead end. There are a lot of very valid objections to it. Logic objections, nothing to do with religion. It's the most promising theory available however.
Quantum Mechanics can be tested against our reality. And although the results are strange (= not what you would expect based on our perception of reality) again and again QM has proven to be predict correctly. So it's a theory with high predictable value. And that's exactly what you want from a theory. That's the difference with religion.
