imho the 182 is a better road car in almost every aspect than the N/A (and possibly the terbow... I have no idea why the 172/182 crowd go for an N/A as they are hugely slower on the road). Yes its a crappy shopping hatch but its a giggle, you can really really really p*ss about and it wont hurt, plus they are so cheapp you can just chuck it in the bin and get another.

I liked mine, but it soon got irritating for daily use, which is the killer in my book, its not great enough to be a daily driver, but its not special enough to be a second car.

How do you think the Renault Sport spider compares to the VX ?  Seems that recent reviews compare it more favourably to the Elise when the original reviews put the Elise way ahead.  For me it just seems to be the rarity / exclusivity card that makes it more appealing to some people now, when really it lacks the clever engineering and greater development of the Elise / VX. [/quote] No idea how the two compare - I never got to drive a Spider. From memory it had full rose jointed track suspension, so the engineering was up to date. I guess the roof leaked a little more though!

My dad used to own one. But my opinion doesn't matter according to some people on here

It's going to be on the H2 channel from March (Sky: 531; Virgin Media: 236; TalkTalk: 491) and will be repeated on ITV4 later in the year for those with terrestrial telly only

It's actually been pretty good on Discovery I think. Proper car show rather than 3 over-grown children acting out carefully scripted twaddle

Never had a problem with a 182 on the road, pretty much the same pace as an NA, other than (as you note) you can drive the Clio like a twat 99% of the time and get away with it.. The road is a great leveller, and not much short of a Jap 4x4 turbo nutter salon will eek out much distance on proper roads - I remember the Evo tested the (then new) V10 M6 against a Trophy - other than decent straights, the Clio was glued to the beemers fat rear end..

Drove a ph2 v6 a few years ago, was a sense of occasion but that's about it. Owned 172cup 182FF & trophy all dynamically superior cars to the vee. 172cup was the best of the bunch, Infact I really need to buy another....

That's my thought might be time to let the Vx move on

I guess the roof leaked a little more though!

The spider failed against the Elise back in the day because Renault used an aluminium welded chassis opposed to the bonded section chassis of the Elise.

So the Spider ended up much heavier.

The Spider felt very solid on the road and would have been a great car if it had got a bit more power.

Having said that, owning a Spider is more about the rarity and all the looks you get driving it around. I've never had another car that got the attention of the Spider, especially at petrol stations when you get out and people see the doors go up.

Still kicking myself, sold mine a few years back for sub 15k, but it was becoming clear that getting parts was a problem.

The only thing that shocked me at first was the lack of servo assistance on the brakes, it would stop, but you needed to put big pressure on the brake pedal.

If anyone on here does want to buy one I have a full set of Renault workshop manuals and a large library of photos of pretty much every area on the car which can be used to see if it's in original condition.

For pride of ownership the Spider was the best car I've ever owned.

The V6 is a classic no doubt. Its a special car but dont expect much in the way of driving thrills. By modern standards its slow, dim witted and although the phase 2 is pretty planted its just not an impressive performance car. But it looks ace.

I think to earn a place in my garage I'd want a bit more out of a car than just people pointing at it when you drive it which is really all the V6 offers. I'm sure the low mileage ones will nestle on trickle charge in collections and always be worth money but theres always going to be something more enjoyable to take out.

They are pretty heavy on consumables as well which is almost offensive given the meagre performance on offer.

Anyone who thinks any car like this is over priced at the moment though...wrong!

All these types of cars arent going to be made ever again. Numbers are getting smaller all the time. More and more people that couldnt afford one at the time will buy them etc. Just look at mk2 Escorts.

Thanks guys, very useful to gather some opinions. I was just getting itchy feet really so was thinking of fairly low depreciating alternatives for around £10k. Love the look of the V6 and I don't do track work, but they might be a bit too far removed from a drivers car. An R53 Mini GP might be a better balance of function/form. Could try an Elise S2 with a rev happy engine, but then it's pretty much the same elsewhere as my VX, albeit with different looks!

10k will not get you a very good Elise even S1's are more than that these days for a good one

Agreed Jonny, probably need a few more grand to get one worth having. At that point Z4M's come into play which I've got a huge soft spot for! Think the VX will end up staying to be honest, such great value motoring. I think part of the reason I've got itchy feet is because it's so damn reliable I don't have to tinker with it nearly as much as my previous motors! A TVR would be delightful but not really much use for some of the day to day stuff I do (stop start driving).
