Dear Christ that was a brutal journey. Niort to Orange in a day. 10hrs, 3rd degree sunburn (roof off entire way obvs) and not eaten since breakfast. But this pint tastes like pure nectar. So, bit too knackered and delirious to post a full update but the main thing is I have another car issue. There is a pronounced whine (not the SC) coming from the rear pax side. The CV boot slipped a bit and sprayed some grease at Zandvoort but I jubilee clipped it back on and it's not moved since. Now I'm really concerned the CV joint is on the way out. Anyone got any ideas? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

If no other option, would putting more grease in help, if you can find some?

Bookmarked B)

If you are coming south west from Orange we are near Carcassonne and it's always open house for petrolheads!

Mental note made :) thumbsup

Is it not a slipping belt/alternator issue? Never really heard a CV joint "whine"... (is it rev related whining or speed related?? )

The Opel dealer in Orange is Pierre Balbi phone 04 90 11 45 45 although generally the dealers are not very enthusiastic about Speedsters/VXs!  The grease should be easy to buy at any garage or tractor dealer.  The nearest Lotus dealers, according to their list, are Group Capel in Montpellier phone 04 99 52 63 67 or there is Colombo Challenge in Marseille 04 42 72 11 11.  I found also what looks like a specialist for proper sports cars, the only pic shows lots of Porsches but I know nothing about them from first hand.  They are just south of Orange at Chateaurenard and are called Ateliers Sports Mecaniques phone 04 90 94 25 93.  Hope that all helps but do PM me if you are stuck.  As a point of interest my diff  or gearbox, not sure which, whines like mad once it is properly warm!

There are actually two whines. The most worrying one (more of a moan!) happens when accelerating from around 85-90mph and is coming from the rear pax side. When you get last 90 it abruptly stops. Really odd.

Gearbox whine?

The second whine could be the gearbox. Seems to be coming from pretty central behind me. This one is there almost always when the throttle is constant or accelerating but seems to go when lifting off. Is that normal? I'm in bed now and can here the whine still! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Also worth checked if there is a air leak on the intake manifold. Try getting a can of brake cleaner and sprsying it around the intake manifold Be careful not to spray it anywhere near the exhaust

As he says.  You're hearing things because you're spending too much time in the car!

Don't chase the noises, it'll drive you mad and waste all your time.  Drive it!

whine could be from an imbalance from using a jubilee clip rather than CV boot clip. You'd be surprised how small an imbalance is needed. alternatively, it could just by the tyres wearing in or a stone trapped in the tread. Don't let it spoil the trip, there's not much you can do to fix it anyway.

Easily my favourite thread on org at the moment. Love the spontaneity of the trip and the planning over breakfast where you will end up. Hope you've got a decent small tent as back up just in case!

Could it be tyres? The ZZR's are really noisy on the road.

Great thread. I've done loads of decent European trips in the past, but it's always great to read someone else's take on it all. As the others have said, don't worry about the noise now, worry about it when it finally breaks. Just hope that's in the vicinity of a decent bar.

We're at Paul Ricard! Bit too excited!

Rich now in his pants in the Exige :D Posted Image

It's must be about 38 deg and the cars already hot everywhere and haven't even got on track yet.

Noise - now think it's the gearbox. Does it at the same revs in 4th and 5th. Could it need oil?

Will try not to worry but it's got to do three track days and another two weeks of exploring...

Is the F23 gearbox standard- or over-filled?

VX field remedy for gearbox noise was to overfill the box to 2.35 litres. (Standard filling to the level plug is ~1.75litres me think)

We did this trip last year but took nearly 2 weeks to get to Orange...much more relaxed!

whine.....not tyre related is it. 888's were always noisy at certain speeds.
