Nobody up for shaving their tyres then?

Theres loads on the web about this,

but would be interested in your first hand reasoning

+1

Also interested in why the R888R rather than the ZZR on your race car. Is it because of regulation or because you prefer them?

The R888R are night and day  a head over the ZZR make no mistake it was just the wear rate of the rears i couldn't live with, but reading about the  tire shaving thread it might be worth a other shot with them

the one other thing i did find with the R888R is the tire wall has a lot more give in them and could make the rear bouncy when getting on the brakes from full throttle

The real question should be how close the RSR compared with ZZR are for the cost

I've always raced on 888's. Season before last we raced at Rockingham (which has a very coarse surface). Did quali on 888s and the car was all over the place. We had a new set of ZZR in the van so put those on for the race, difference was night and day. Very controleable break away, lasted the whole 45 minutes, could really steer the car on the throttle. So good we won the race. Next race was at Brands, kept the ZZR on for quali and car just didnt feel right so we put the 888 back on and it was fine. Tried the ZZR at a Silverstone trackday and wasnt impressed. Now I just stick with 888's, also they are my race series control tyre this coming season, not that I'll be doing much this season anyway.

Building an MX5 trackday car at present so will probably try 595's on that

Interesting that there's such huge variation in this thread. Maybe the tyres are very pressure sensitive?

You wont be setting any records with them. I was 6 seconds off my pb using 08's butbpart of that was the suspension setup.

How is this for a first attempt to make a list on popular tyres for our car.

I see street and street/track as the same thing. Ive used standard bridgies on track and they were really good.

I really like the ad08 feel, even though it's not the fastest dry weather tyre. And in the wet the ad08 is a much better road/track combo tyre. As almost all of you have two sets of wheels (TDs and OEM) I maintain to get 888 or ZZR for dry and ad08 or r1r for wet or long haul.

- So most probably better to keep the 08's for this cold winter weather even on track then ? Is there another set of wheels I could get instead of the TD's 16/17 combo too ?

I did drive a vx on the road on a set of nankank ns2r I think they were. They had some good potential on the road and would be worth a shot on track

Has anyone heard any feedback on the Nankang NS-2R? Seem very well priced on pneusonline.

There are a few choices but not as many as people would like I suspect. Compomotive mo, speedlines, oz super T's etc, and things like the Ats Dtc if you want 17's all round. My only issue with the vx options are the weight, the TDs are about the lightest readily available. I swapped my hubs for 4bolt and fitted lotus forged wheels to get around this.

With all this talk of 6 seconds per lap... I am interested in stickies :) (Currently run AD08s) Quick question though... with all (?) of the sticky options only available in a 195 front... how will this influence front end feel etc., as I currently run 205's. thumbsup

I went from a 205 R1R to a 295 AD08R and found little in it. I then went to the 195 ZZR and find there's a combo of more outright grip like the tyre is hanging on by it's fingernails, and also the steering became lighter and has a bit more feeling to it.

Can't fault the Federal 595 RSR apart from if they have done a lot of heat cycles! I'm going to give full slicks a try this year so will keep you posted :)

It was very old 888s I had on at the national at Rockingham last year. I think I had more grip in the wet there.

Such a strange surface that doesn't like old tyres!
