Laurens car has had a weird solid sounding knocking coming from the front of her car for a while now.

The cars been looked at by a couple of experts in the past and have been unable to track it down but now it seems very obviously coming from the front middle area.

If you rock the car it carries on for just a bit after you've stopped like its something swinging possibly.

Any ideas as to what could do that in that area, maybe around the steering rack?

Could it be the alarm or horn sounder swinging around loose somehow? Trying to think of things in the front that may cause this. You may find it hard to trace as the knock will reverberate along the panels in that area.

I was thinking about those. I agree its a sod to get in there as it sounds right deep inside the crash box area.

is it the pads in the calipers moving?

Edit: ignore me, i cant read properly.

Could it be a bolt or something rolling about?

could be the washer bottle... with the liquid moving it would explain why it keeps happening after you stop moving the car

Knackered shock? Knackered ARB drop link(s)? Knackered tie rods on the steering rack knocking?

Bit odd that it's coming from the middle, I would have said ARB drop links, mine knocked when they were knackered. Easy to check for wear.

Thanks Matt, that video is the noise exactly. So what part is knackered there, tie rods 'on' the steering rack? Any diagram welcome.

Martin

ps Zoobeef and Bot tried finding it. I just had delivered new drop links and ball joints but when I went to start the job it just seemed really clear now that  it wasn't them, as the noise has got worse since they looked at it. It echos thorugh the car so has been a pig to track. No notable feel when driving and its been like it at least for a year.

Can you not just replace parts?

How much is a refurbished steering rack?

Could be the front ball joints. I had exactly the same kind of thing and they were the culprit... Very similar to the worn rack noise too... which worries me since I had already replaced it. Can you feel a clicking through the steering too?

The noise is definitely coming from the middle area of the car not anywhere near the droplinks or ball joints.

I don't believe you can feel it through the steering, just hear it. It drives fine.

before you go removing anything,

Martin you said the noise continues after you stop rocking the car

I would check the water bottle and fuse box first and maybe even the heater matrix

it could even be a water pipe

If it was an inner track rod, can they be replaced?

Will check other things but from above all seems ok, guess its front undertray off time, to see what visible and checkable, but the noise is just like in that video.

Universal joint at the bottom of the steering column.? Mines klunked like a futher mucker, going over anything other than perfect road surfaces, (can anyone remember those), also klunked when I pushed the car from side to side even when stationary, now replaced and all's quiet on the front end now.
