No, they aren't cool. Frankly if you tell anyone you own a vx220 you are looked at as a bit of wierdo. And rightly so knowing a good proportion of the regular contributors Nope, it's not a cool car. It's brilliant endearing and capable and it turns heads a bit, but it's not cool.

A brilliant discussion. Turbo boy has summed it up very well. I am sick of paying for the badge and i want something fast and different.i think i have found what i am looking for. As an added bonus they are also simple and cheap! Ive been looking at lots of pictures of vx220s and have a few plans. Now, to find a cheap tatty one to make my own!!!

I'm not sure what cool is But as I Wright cool I get this emoji 😎 I'm going to take a stab at and it's like most coolness is just like crapness it's in the eye of the beholder I suppose it depends on if it's what you want or is it more what you want your friends to think of you Personally I don't care much It's what I spent my own cash on I enjoy it get to meet other people who enjoy it. I'm not sure what cool means to different people. I think the vx is a good looking car, it's aged well (look at an S2 now and it looks beyond fussy), and it's got the performance to back up the looks. I was at a track day last year and some kids were there with their parents, they walked past a row of Porsches and the like to quietly sit on the floor next to my car and draw it in their colouring books!!! Ultimately I think a lot of members on here have the money to buy whatever they want within reason and choose a vx on merit. Personally I don't give a crap what badge is on it or what others think of it, as it drives great.

Lets be honest, a lot of us bought one because it was a lot cheaper than the equivalent elise

I didn't. I had a 111R before my VX but the engine was rubbish with no torque and when it got written off I could have had another one, and Exige S or a Honda S1 at the time. The VX for me is the best of the bunch

Did you consider the elise SC ?

I looked at the Exige S which is broadly the same. It's all subjective on looks but the facts on the cars isn't for dispute in my view and the vx made the best option because the others have flaws. The S1 roof is crap The S1 engines are prone to failure via head gasket The S2 Toyota engine is too 'thin' for my liking The Exige looks rubbish with the roof off and I wanted a convertible I wanted to modify whatever I bought so knew the vx had the platform ready for fitting a SC

Not me.  The VX has much better lines than an Elise (or even an Exige). 

Is my VX oool?  I don't know and I don't care.  The only thing that matters to me is it makes me smile every time I drive it

If you want a "cool" car as decided by the uneducated masses stick to a VW or get a Porsche. If your want an under appreciated gem of a car you know what to do......
