The continuation of the accurate mileage on MOT certificates is pretty important, especially if you ever sell the car.

Someone can easily get the mileage "corrected" a week before the MOT to make it appear lower.

Just trying to say that it's mileage means virtually nothing and shouldn't really be used as a guide when buying a car.  It could have covered only 10,000 miles in 15+ years but still be on original oil and filter!

As C8RKH says, proper documentation is what you need to be looking at.

whilst on the subject of 'clocking' and mileage, at one point in the future when I decide to sell the car (if nothing bad happens to it before then) can the stack gauge have miles added onto it to (rather than the shady practice of removing miles) to get it back to the correct mileage that it has done after having this screen attached, so this would then enable me to sell the screen separately?

Yes, many people offer "mileage correction" services.

All I'm trying to say is mileage gives no true indication of the condition of the car, so not as important as some make out.

The simplest way is to hook up the speed signal input of the oem cluster to a pulse generator

it will take about 300 mph max and the odometer will increment over 7000 miles a day

...just done forget about it

As can be seen by the last few responses, there is no end of "easy" ways to alter the mileage on cars.  However, what you cannot alter easily are the MOT records and original service documentation, especially as the MOT certificate information, including I believe mileage, has now all been loaded online by DVLA.

I intend to ask my local service agent (a well known, trusted, specialist in Lotus) to verify the mileage on the Stack cluster (I will produce a letter that he will sign and stamp and I will keep with all the other documentation i have for the car) and the date it was "swapped".  If I can, I am happy to "set" the GARW mileage to match the Stack on removal and also get that confirmed and documented.  In all, it will take me about 15 minutes to create the paperwork, max.

However, if I ever sell the car, I think the GARW will be a very attractive mod and I will throw in the original Stack unit too. I may be being niaive, but I believe an open and transparent, documented approach like this will allay any fears from future buyers and the MOT records will validate the figures too etc.

I think we're worrying about nothing, but then as i said, I might be being niaive.  I bought my VX to drive and enjoy, not as an alternate investment / pension strategy

Do people have the same concerns re mileage for SC conversions?  I mean, you can £5k+ to people like Courtenay and use all new parts, or, use second hand parts (how do you guarantee their provenance and mileages?) for a lot less.  Both will be perfectly fine and will give many miles of trouble free motoring, yet one will have "defined" or "confirmed" mileage and the other not.  I would have thought the SC conversion was more material to the future value of the car than the miles on the dash that may, or may not, have been changed.

I was thinking more from a legal perspective.  Just doing some reading and it is illegal to knowingly sell a "clocked" car without full disclosure to the buyer.  Given the mileage can be set at the outset on GARW i guess it shouldn't be a problem if you set this to where the stack was at when you removed it.  That way, you leave yourself out of a legal grey area.

Apparently firms that can adjust the mileage will be banned by May 2018 by the EU....

I filmed this quick and rough vid of the test unit I fitted to help Alec develop the screen. I'm not sure how far the unit has come since then, because this one didn't have the VX clock set skin and we worked through quite a few bugs as you would expect. https://youtu.be/r-j1iDVP4uQ This is the 8" screen by the way, and my steering wheel is slightly smaller than OEM. In my driving position the wheel cuts the top corners off but I could still see all the dial info.

thumbsup I suspect that will need a bespoke binnacle to fit nicely. Dash looks great though!

According to the ordering page, the 8" fits the VX binnacle with no mods required but will need the binnacle to be modded if going into an Elise.  This is why I ordered the 8" for my VX as want an easy plug and play install as when I start modding stuff it, well, er, breaks!

It may fit but does it look ok? The screen is a little square for the binnacle so it may look a bit odd without reshaping. Does this make sense?
