pic 1 - starter motor wiring is correct

pic 2 - alternator plug, the terminal should be inside the plug housing, just gently pull the wire so it goes back.

pic 3 - I usually shorten the fuel tank vent hose, so that it sits above the charcoal canistor

pic 4 - cam breather usually connects to the throttle body intake pipe (from the standard airbox)

pic 5 - knock sensor, bolts to block above the starter motor (you need the inlet manifold off to fit this)

Today's session at the workshop was brought to you by the words "Let's plug everything back in".....

Not many "Progress" photo's today as i'm sure you would all be bored of one for each plug back in. I'm pretty sure that all plugs are re-connected, except for a couple of rogues :

Posted Image

Whats this one? Where does it go? I have tried to show the whole thing and where it comes from?

This one is still causing me issues. The black plastic that was around it, doens't fit into the Alternator plug. Vocky gave me instructions as to where it went but i can't seem to make it work!?

Posted Image

Now a few for piece of mind, let me know if i have put anything in the wrong place

Couldn't resist finally putting the newly powdercoated rocker cover on....although the rubet gaskets i bought were the wrong ones  so i''m back on the hunt  before i can fix it in place:

So thats it for a couple of weeks, i am behind where i wanted to be but nothign a few weekends and some cash won't sort out. I wanted to have the car running before i went away to Le Mans next week (Not because i was taking it!!! ) but it's just not happened.

Need to collect my Bolt Kit from JG and order the Pro Alloy Rad from Joe, then just a few odds and ends needed and maybe, just maybe, she might actually start in the next month or so.

Posted Image

It's pictures like that which make me remember i took a slightly worn but working car and won't know for a little while yet whether it'll work again!!

Off to Le Mans in the A6 next week, (Which helped dent the VX fund with its Cambelt, Service and MOT this month!!!!), i'll have to hope the stalls don't take all my money, hopefully there is a discount VX parts stall there!! :tumble:

the plug goes to the charcoal filter and connects to the fuel tank vent valve. What colour is the single wire ? I don't have access to a wiring diagram for several weeks, so perhaps MrT might look it up for you.

Cheers Vocky, the single wire at the rear is Brown? but it looks like it only has one connector on it and i cant seem to see anything that it would fit into?

There seems to be an un-connected/loose (grounding?) eyelet close to the cam plate on this photo?

Bye, Arno.

the plug is probably still on the alternator and the wire was pulled out, try and find a picture and you will soon know if it is.

Ok, so i didn't think it had been that long since i had updated this!!

Work has massively got in the way and trying to move house has severly restircted the funds available but i did some old school saving and finally have the next pile of shiney goodness to go onto the car!

Posted Image

I bought one of the Alloy Radiators from the chaps on eBay, it was half the price of the Pro Alloy one, But :

******eBay buying alert!! It says "direct replacement" Its not, the actual Rad itself has fitted fine in the housing but the pre welded brackets for the Fan were not in the correct place so required some fiddling with the plastic clips from the old fan and a slightly larger hole being drilled. Thought it worth informing people!*****

A delivery from JG should hopefully make putting things back together a whole lot easier than the removal of 10 year old rusty bolts!!!

Posted Image

I had an issue with the brakes when the car was on the road, the pedel felt long and went further than usual, after a visit to BOT for a brake bleed and fresh fluid....no change, new pads.....no change....eventually we discoved one of the fixings on the on the brake servo bracket had been lost and was causing the whole thing to lift about 2cm when i pressed the brake.

Fast forward 2 years...i thought i'd better fix it

Drilled out the broken rivet and added a second hole...just for luck.

Posted Image

New rivets added and its solid as a rock once agian with no movement

Posted Image

The Bracket for the Header Tank was in its usual state and rusted completey, a rub back with the wire drill attachement revelaved actual metal underneath the brown mess.

Posted Image

A coat of Kurust and left it for an hour, and it removed the rust and turned its funny blue / black colour

Posted Image

A quick Wash and a coat of Hammerite and it'll be good as new.....ish :ninja:

Why is everything on this car a state!!!

Posted Image

A couple of dremal discs later and the bolts and clips were seperated for the new Rad.

This is what i mean with the Rad fan brackets not quite lining up :

Posted Image

Posted Image

After about 25 mins of trying to do the bolts up on the housing....seems my fingers are too fat! It was all back together for the 1st time in months. The EliseParts silicone hoses are on too and clean up of the housing makes it all look a lot better.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

With the radiator housing back on, the whole thing lines up and isn't dragging along the floor !

Posted Image

So, fingers crossed thats the last MAJOR mechanicaly pieces of the jigsaw. its now had pretty much new everything all round.....not what i had originally planned but I got carried away with "whilst im there" thinking.

Oil, Coolant, Brake and clutch fluid and new battery will be on order this week, along with a can of new fuel. Then next week, she may actually get started for the 1st time in 2 years. rallly

Any Advice from anyone who has done it before? :poke:  I'm papping myself at turning the key so an experienced persons checkiist would be brilliant. I've managed to change all of the bits over the last  4 pages with no mechanical nouse whatsover...that last thing i need is it blowing up on the first turn of the key if i havn't done something correctly!

There must be some dregs of fuel left in the tank from a coupld of years ago, is it ok to stick a jerry can of new fuel in? How woudl i empty the old stuff otherwise?

I will let you all know.....

I would turn the engine over via a spanner the crank pulley before doing any thing just to make sure nothing has seized once it is filled with fresh oil. If it hasn't been started for 2 years it might be worth bringing the oil pressure up before starting. Take the plugs out and remove the fuel pump relay, then turn over until the oil light goes out. It will also let you know the engine turns over and sounds ok before the first start. Hope all goes well.
