They value the car via Glass guide at £4400 in uncrashed state. They value the car at £400 in its current state. They say £4k repair costs which is utter bollox![/quote]
It would cost them £4k, as they will cost it at the following (approx):
£1500 clam
£800 passenger lamp
£300 paint
£600 labour
then the rest could easily be swallowed in 'incidentals and hire car costs'.
Who are you insured with? As I know a couple of insurers that smiply won't budge on settlement. The only was they could be moved is via an approved complaint through the financial obudsman.

I second getting the ombudsman involved, many years back I had an XR2 stolen and was made a low offer by my insurance company. I sent autotrader adverts showing the prices the cars were going for at the top end and they countered it sending back loads of adverts for cars at the bottom end Still not happy I contacted the ombudsman stating a realistic offer I was expecting and the offer was upped close to this figure. Worth a try.

What value did you declare when you got your quotation?

You mean on my own insurance? It's going through his, sorry if I've not understood. I've emailed a load of ads through to my claim handler who is back on Monday so we'll see. Thanks for all the support people. What value did you declare when you got your quotation?

I don't understand this as normally when you declare a value, they accept and charge you accordingly. You declare a low amount, that is the max they will pay out. So I would be pushing for what you declared.
But you are right in doing your homework on getting the valuation i.e. for sale ads.

Bloody hell... No one should bother selling their cars - just crash 'em and cash in seems to make the most financial senseI got £5,250 and my car back. 2003 na with 85,000. Push for more cash
To be fair as a non cat car I estimated it to be worth about £7,250 due to spec. They offered me that as a settlement figure and let me buy the car back as a cat d for £2,000
Just to be clear, that's not happening here. If you claim through your insurance, they will take possession, place the car on the register and sell you the salvage.
OP is negotiating a payment whereby the claim is settled and he keeps the car. Mathematics is the same, but the car remains his property throughout.
If they've estimated its salvage value at a few hundred quid, I wonder what they'll say when you prove it was worth 7 or 8K

It baffles me how companies come to these values. Has anyone in the history of .org ever sold a car that low?
My last car was in need of paint work but mechanically top notch and I got in excess of £7k. From memory, A finger in the air value for a CAT car should be in ecess of £5k

CAP guide will be many companies first resource, which is meant to represent what cars are going through the auction houses at. £4.5k is what is was offered for a part-ex on mine. Needless to say I walked away from the deal. I am not saying that this is what a VX is actually worth, but gives you an indication of what & how insurance companies will value it. A well looked after car, on here, would command a premium. However, in the car sales market, new bushes, new shock absorbers, new tyres, track rod ends, steering racks etc etc are simply classed as 'maintenance' so just part of the 'general price'It baffles me how companies come to these values.
