Seriously is it a lump of iron like the turbos, or a light engine like the NA's. Have I just added weight to the car??

Martin S

It's aluminium.

But you may have added a bit of weight, maybe 10 kg - the sandcasted head will generally be denser, and the gen 3 block (correct me if i'm wrong, anyone) has been strengthened compared to the Z22SE block.

There is very little in it especially when you take into account the Saab oil cooler is lighter than the Z22se Your saving weight on the fly wheel and removing balancer shafts There loads of little things which saves you weight When moving my new engine around compared with old engine there were no noticeable difference Plus it was shiny

Bought it on a wim as was given the impression it would just bolt in!

I'm not mechanical, I just like driving and because of that, I should be able to give a thorough and honest review of how this conversion actually works for real, on road and track as soon as I can (Spa is happening just a few weeks after it fires up), so should be interesting times ahead.

get cracking then , the more time you can put to good now, will give you more to troubleshoot the usual stuff.

they do bolt straight in, however converting them from turbo to NA or SC is not so simple

Nothing like a last minute engine change 😬 I'm sure it will be fine Martin If you want to take a drive up north for the running in process I could help with the mapping

I'll pop over to Vocky's and run it in, whilst you're away, if you want? :D I ran my first uprated engine in on our first trip to the Le Mans double headers. Ran the second one in on journeys to and from three MSV trackdays in a 10 days. It's easy. :P

Have planned a night out in Bristol, that 350 miles for me, 140 back from Vockys (may make that into a 200), big thing will be understanding and using the software.

Sutol who only lives 25 miles from me will hopefully be my Yoda on that but appreciate the offer Chill.

Once it's mapped you can forget all about the software unless you tinker more with your set up. Get Peter to email you a map across based on your exact set up and it won't be far off.

Mapping will be easy. Just leave the base map alone. Do a fuel learn approx 1 hour. Then a knock session 30 mins job done. Fine tune the map when you get back.

As Acid says give Peter the full spec and you will be 95% there anyway.

now I have seen a few z22se timing chains and some were quite terrible

But then there were these  :o

All from a certain engine which shall remain nameless  :ninja:

ps: it did have the 'death rattle' for one second on cold start up
