Seriously is it a lump of iron like the turbos, or a light engine like the NA's. Have I just added weight to the car??

Martin S

It's aluminium.

But you may have added a bit of weight, maybe 10 kg - the sandcasted head will generally be denser, and the gen 3 block (correct me if i'm wrong, anyone) has been strengthened compared to the Z22SE block.

This is the 'Gen 1' engine anyway, effectively albeit with forged rods and better pistons, meaning its much stronger internally. I think the 'Gen 3' variant was only ~1.5kg heaver due to block reinforcement anyway (to allow larger internal oil pathways, and better support for the piston liners - according to GM blurb)

In theory its slightly lighter, as the 2.0 crank is lighter being a 'square' engine, IIRC..

:)

Did you find the missing bit of piston anywhere??!!

the only signs it was ever there were the missing chunk of ringland and the many dents in the piston crown before it escaped out the exhaust

Weirdly the cylinder head survived with just a couple of tiny chips. The spark plug seems to have taken all the hits, so the head will live to fight another day :)

How big was the piece of piston and presumably it's now wedged into the cat?

Any damage too the bore?

New piston, rings and then It can be the spare engine for a while?

Thats exactly how mine was, in fact my plug was worse than Martins but the head was hardly touched

From looking at it with the scope it looked around 5mm to 10mm by about 3mm

What causes this? Was martin's and 5'clocks the same cylinder?

Yes and others and on Martins and mine the negative electrode had bent upwards and was touching the positive electrode

Have you got a photo of what the head looks like?

Interested to see if it was burning leaner from one end than the other.

Are you putting s wideband in Martin Since you will be pushing past 250hp it's recommended to use one for WOT mapping

How do you put in a S Wideband (what is a S wideband?1!) what's WOT mapping , I seem to have entered a strange and mystical place where people talk in strange tongue?!

It was suggested doing the map learning then finishing with a rolling road that would check the upper and lower fuelling does that do the job?

With expensive trackways coming up I think he's more nervous (about the reliability) !
